The Moorabbin Football Club was founded by Geoff Burke in September (Show Day)1978. Our first season of competition was in 1979 where we joined the Y.C.W Football League. To begin with we fielded one team and this particular competition allowed for this. The downside was travelling to places such as Point Cook RAAF base, East Thomastown, Heidelberg, West Preston. To counteract this we turned the travelling to tou advantage and went by bus as a unit which was definitely beneficial. Having only one team made it possible for our supporters to help fill the bus and also helped subsidise the costs. The early years were the formative years of the club and to me were the most enjoyable of the thirty years thus far. We played some good footballand came up against some very good opposition as there were many more clubs in existence at that time. We played in finals in 1983 and 1984, lust losing the preliminary in 1983 to Clayton by 7 points. During the 1985 season I recommended to our committee to field a second side and join the Eastern Suburbs Churches Football Association. This we did for the start of the 86 season and although we struggled early as a club to double in size, it was a timely move as the Y.C.W competition went into recess at the close of 1986 and moving then would have been much more difficult. It was a prerequisite of the ESCFA that all clubs field two sides. We had moderate successin the ESCFA but continuity these days, I believe is success anyway. When we joined the "churches" as it was called, there were a total of 54 Clubs (5 Divisions). By the end of 1991 we were somewhere in the 30's when the previously known South East Suburban League, who has 18 clubs left, changed its name to the Southern Football League and commenced merger talks with the Churches in a salvage bid for both bodies. After lenghty league discussions of all clubs a merger was finalised and season 1993 saw the bodies combine under the Southern Football League, bringing the total number of Clubs to around 50. (Season 2002 and the League is down to 28 clubs) Season 1993 was a milestone as we won both premierships, seniors and reserves, the reserves going through undefeated. Our march into history was cut short when the following year Moorabbin Council refused to let us use the ground after resowing it so we had no proper training facility, we had to play our home games on Cheltenham Park which is no more than a picninc ground and missed a finals birth by 2% from Carnegie (who have since folded). 1995 saw us win the best conducted club award which is something I am very proud of as an administrator. 1996 saw us again have both sides in the Grand Final but this time it was not to be as both teams were beaten by Cheltenham Assumption (another club which has since folded) in the late 90's there was some upheaval which saw players leave and in season 99 many players played both games on the Saturday. We had been in a rebuilding mode for a few years now and Football at this level has become extremely difficult because the young people of today regard a sporting club as a convenience, rather than an integral part of their lives where comradeship, loyalty, integrity and honour has always been the code of life. However modern thinking we may become, if those values are not at the forefront of a club's makeup, then that sporting club will soon join the folded list. 2002 there was a rebirth of things happening. New blood with interest, sponsorships and players, helping bring fruition a dream which I have harboured for 24 years of being aligned with the beloved Kangaroos. A giant leap of the shackles of mediocrity and give the club some real standing in the community. 2003 we saw a an influx of players from all walks of life, we had samoan, lebanese, australian all playing football together and the mix was amazing. Even though many of these guys had not picked up a football before the bond between all at the club had the Kangaroos vying for finals for the first time in six or seven years. Unfortunately some of the samoan players were deported due to legal red tape. The samoan boys were given visas to play sport and due to the fact they also worked during their stay were deported. As it is one of the boys Mika who was an absolute standout has since played Rugby World Sevens for Samoa, showing the calibre of what the samoan boys offered our club. The seniors played in the first semi final against Black Rock at Caulfield with the heavens opening up before the start of play. In a fiery encounter Black Rock prevaled with Ali Kiki being the major shining light on a doomy day. 2004 Saw the appointment of Matthew Merrifield as coach and the club really started to become a major player in Division 3. Making the finals again seemed inevitable but we just scraped in so to make it further than the previous year we would face elimination all the way through the finals. We made it through to the grand final only to lose by under a goal. To our nemesis Black Rock who on the day had the help of AFL Player of The Century Leigh Matthews in their corner. The effort of the team was amazing and showed we werent to far away from winning a flag. 2005 The club was looking forward to the year but suffered an initail set back with the loss of Matthew Merrifield to the police force. So we appointed Brad Collins a rugged take no crap Coach who with the previous years list and the inclusion of Mimo Dimascki, Danny Osbaldeston, Paul Youle and Robert Donnelly we looked the goods. For some reason or another we could not beat Doveton who were installed as favourites for the flag. As a club we were confident that we would get out of second gear and finally we did in the second semi final. Fia Tootoo played one of the most devastating first halves of football I have ever witnessed to set up in the end a soft win for us against Doveton. Grand Final day we ended up playing against North Kew who defeated Doveton and it was an absolute procession. Mimo Dimashcki & Huss Kiki had days out and the contest was well and truly over by three quarter time where we walked away convincing winners. The reserves also made it through to the finals but lost in the first semi final unfortunately. The club had made its way out of third division and was looking forward to the challenges of Second Division. 2006 The clubs first year in second division we had many knockers who believed we would go straight back down to third division. Retaining all of the previous years list we started like a steam train and in the home and away season we lost only four matches. But lost the first semi final to Oakleigh Districts. It was a dissapointing end to a promising season and it also signalled changes to the club. On an individual note Mimo at Full Forward was fantastic topping the 100 goals for the season. The off season was a feeding frenzy for other clubs who had now seen the quality of our players and ridiculous offers started to appear for players, none that we would match. A lot happened in the off season and really the only adage you could say is that the club is and always will be bigger than any individual. The majority of people at the club were not prepared to sell the club off for short term glory, which a few wanted. The interest of the club were maybe not on their agenda as we rarely now see these people supporting the club. Brad Collins was not renewed as coach. 2007 Saw the appointment of Aaron Bailey as senior coach and Adrian Zandt as reserves coach. The main objective was to build again after the loss of players. We saw it through finishing seventh but never really looked like making it any higher. 2008 The club regained David Sheehan and with our younger players such as Casey Mazzoletti, Murphy Kerr coming of age we thought that we could improve on our ladder position. Injuries ravaged us and we were good enough to beat the also rans but could not match the top sides. It certainly was a mixed year. 2009 The appointment of Danny Osbaldeston as Senior Coach, David Santa Maria as his assistant and Timmy Caterson as Reserves coach brings us some quality people who want to see the club consolidate to enable longer term growth which is where we are at. These guys are successful footballers who can help all and sundry improve. Make this a great season guys and be a part of the proud history of the Moorabbin Kangaroos. |
